Technically winter is still around us, but soon spring will have sprung and the weather will pick up. Chelmsford has two theatres on offer for you to enjoy, The Civic Theatre and Cramphorn studio. Being only a ten-minute drive away, it’s easy to turn your day trip into a short break for all the family.

Throughout the months of January, February and March there is a wide variety of entertainment on offer for all the family. The most difficult part is deciding what you want to see. And that is where we come in! We’ve searched through the long list of productions and showings that will be on offer and as a result have chosen the ones we think you’ll enjoy the most.

Wednesday 18th January: The Tempest

Are you looking for the perfect introduction to Shakespearean plays for the family? Then look no further. Towards the end of January you can look forward to seeing The Tempest, brought to life on the Royal Shakespeare Company stage. A man is left stranded on an island with nothing, except his power of being able to control the elements. He is a magician and he wants revenge on those who wronged him. The Tempest promises to be a ‘stunning cinematic representation of Shakespeare’s much-loved final work.’

Tuesday 24th & Wednesday 25th January: That’ll Be The Day

That’ll Be The Day, the UK’s No.1 Rock & Roll variety production is back with a new show after 3 decades of touring. If you love music from the 50’s and 60’s, right through to the 80’s then this is a must-watch for you. The live performances are guaranteed to make you want to dance along with them in the aisles. Tuesday 28th & Wednesday 29th January: Room on the Broom

This is perfect to bring the kids along to! This is a musical adaption of the classic picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. It tells the story of the Witch and her cat who are on a mission to defeat the dragon. The Olivier-nominated show has toured Britain and the world, but now they are coming to Chelmsford for you and your family. For more information about the show, reviews and tickets, click here.

Sunday 5th February: Swan Lake

Traditional ballet may not be everyone’s cup of tea, however, if it’s yours then you’re in for a treat. Captured live on 25th January and shown at the Cramphorn studio, you can watch a ballet of ultimate beauty. With music by Tchaikovsky and choreography from Yuri Grigorovich, prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova plays the role of the white swan and the black swan perfectly. This ballet is a classic with breath-taking scenes from the Bolshoi’s corps de ballet and it is truly magical. For ticket information, click here.

Tuesday 14th – Saturday 18th March: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

We all know this one as it is one of Shakespeare’s most well known plays, a story of love and all the complications that come with it. However, this is ‘Shakespeare 4 kidz’ which makes it perfect for the whole family to attend for an evening of magic, love, action and humor. Watch as they immerse themselves in the three parallel stories. Running on multiple nights in the middle of March, you’re bound to find a date that suits you. Wednesday 22nd – Saturday 25th March: Alice’s Adventure

Alice in Wonderland is a favourite of nearly everyone’s childhood, whether it was in the form of a book or the Disney movies. We knew all about Alice’s mishaps in the magical world. Now, the Chelmsford Ballet Company is bringing it to life with a fresh new look. Gather the family and prepare to lose yourself in the magical world with the Mad Hatter, tasty cakes and tricky potions. But be careful, you might not want to leave!
